Nothing quite inspires artists the same way as seeing local talent succeed. Canadian duo Majid Jordan, formerly known as GOOD People, have recently released a five track EP entitled ‘A Place Like This’, which has quickly attracted attention from millions of listeners.
Many people find the name familiar, but aren’t quite able to place it. It’s almost bewildering how little people know of them, despite being featured on the 2x Platinum Single, ‘Hold On, We’re Going Home.’ That’s right, the pair were discovered by Drake and signed to OVO Sound, a label co-founded by Drake, Noah “40” Shebib, and Warner Bros. Records. Less than one year after the release of their debut EP ‘afterhours’, the duo co-produced a single that reached number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and sold over 2 million copies in the US.
The smooth yet soulful vocals belong to none other than Majid Al Maskati, who is accompanied by the tranquil beats of producer Jordan Ullman. The duo is all about chill vibes and mesmerizingly smooth beats. As their style falls within the indie pop and alternative/PB R&B genre, they are commonly compared to fellow local artist The Weeknd.
The two graduated from University Toronto and have been active as a duo since 2011. Their newest single ‘A Place Like This’, which completes their five track EP, has over four million plays and 69,000 likes and counting on SoundCloud.
It’s clear that the duo have been staying fairly dormant the past year, as not too much information can be found about them. They’ve released just enough singles to give listeners a sample of their style, leaving them wanting more.
Although it’s still too early to know what will become of their future in the music industry, I think everyone agrees that Toronto is all for local talent and that Majid Jordan will be stepping into the limelight very soon.
