The site shutdown and letter came after it was revealed that they could be liable for approximately $746M(US) in damages if it was determined that the site’s copyright infringement was wilful.

There had been copyright concerns surrounding the site since its inception, forcing app sites like Google Play and the iOS App Store to remove the Grooveshark app completely, leaving Cydia (a black-market software app) the only place to obtain it.

In addition to removing their site, Grooveshark was forced to hand over all intellectual property to the aforementioned labels. If this is Grooveshark’s only punishment, it pales in comparison to the financial damages they could owe. Let them be a cautionary tale for any online service swimming the murky waters of free music streaming.
