Finding #NU EDM artists can be a frustrating experience due to the fairly high turnover rate and oversaturated market. Among the many electronic music producers in the industry right now, these 5 new and rising DJs will give you a leg-up on the hunt for #NU electronic music.
To settle any confusion, neither member of this Dutch House duo is named Larry Koek. The Dutch word, ‘Larrykoek’ translates in English to ‘Bullshit’ and their music is far from it. Since signing to their hometown label Dirty Soul Records, Max Haaxman and Lars Maasland have seen their first original single – ‘Premiere Fois’- generate plenty of attention for its extremely upbeat guitar riffs over wildly funky house beats. They’ve also made some waves by creating their own SnapChat account (SnapID: Larrykoek) to make distant fans feel closer.
20-year-old French music prodigy ‘Hugo Pierre Leclercq’ has been producing music for 9 years, but finally garnered widespread attention after he uploaded a video to YouTube in 2011 where he did a live mashup of 39 of his favourite songs. Since then, Madeon has seen his stock rise steadily with two pop-house EP’s in 2012/2013 and the recently released full-length album – ‘Adventure’. The first single off the album sees Madeon team up with Passion Pit for “Pay No Mind” and his most recent is a very personal track titled ‘Home’ which is the result of Leclercq locking himself in his studio for 24 hours straight.
A rising star in a rising genre, the Norwegian 23-year-old Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll (A.K.A Kygo) has brought Tropical House music to the forefront of the genre. His distinct down-tempo island sound has led him to create a few exclusive original tracks and dozens of fresh remixes of songs from artists ranging from Marvin Gaye to Ed Sheeran. His most recent single is a collaboration with Parson James called “Stole The Show”.
London, Ontario native Edmond Huszar has actually been producing high-quality electronic music since 2008. He worked with Will Steep for two years as electro-rap duo TheGirlsCanHearUs before going solo under the moniker, ‘OVERWERK’ in 2011. Since doing so, he’s received critical praise for his 3 EP’s, contributed music for Gucci, Prada and Lamborghini campaigns, and was described by LA Weekly as “two parts Justice, one part Hans Zimmer”. Check out his most recent collaboration with Toronto vocalist, Nick Nikon for their cover/remix of ‘I Feel Better’.
Galantis’ members Christian “Bloodshy” Karlsson and Linus Eklöw teamed up after each had individually achieved success in previous musical endeavours; Karlsson with Miike Snow and Eklöw with Style of Eye. They met in 2007 and began e-mailing music back-and-forth until they formed Galantis in 2012 (kind of like a modern day Postal Service). Their 2014 single ‘Runaway (U & I)’ reached #1 on the Dutch Top 40 and the 9th track ‘Peanut Butter Jelly’ off their upcoming album, ‘Pharmacy’ currently has music sites buzzing.
