Killer Mike and El-P who form Run the Jewels have released yet another politically charged video for their track ‘Early’ from last years EP, Run the Jewels 2.
In an attempt to keep fans happy while waiting for their delayed Run the Jewels 3, this animated lyric video topically examines the race struggles between citizens and law enforcement that have been escalating in the United States as of late.
A tweet this morning came from @therealelp, saying “me and @KillerMikeGTO have been waiting for the right time to drop this. Then we realized that it is (sadly) always the right time. so…”
The video comes shortly after their terrific Zack de la Rocha collab, ‘Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck)’ video that showed a black man fighting a white cop on the street for the entirety of the song.
It’s not always serious with RTJ, though; late last year they announced they’d be remixing their RTJ2 EP using cat samples in a project called ‘Meow the Jewels’ . A Kickstarter for the project generated $65,783 from 2,828 backers.
Run the Jewels also have a very distinct visual style that strongly represents the NYC/Atlanta-based duo. To help promote the RTJ2 EP, the guys encouraged graffiti artists around the world to ‘Tag the Jewels’ and stylize the iconic Run The Jewels hand-and-gun logo. Word spread quickly and the images even found themselves on the covers of a couple of Marvel comics this year.
Watch the video here and if you really can’t wait for the next EP (likely dropping in 2016), enjoy this sneak peek from El-P’s Instagram, released yesterday.
