David Letterman concluded 33-years and 6028 episodes of his late night show earlier this morning with an incredible montage of the show’s best moments, scored by a live and extended performance of the Foo Fighters’ 1997 hit, ‘Everlong’.
Right before Foo Fighters took the stage, Letterman shared an earnest anecdote about how the song helped him recover from his quintuple bypass surgery in 2000. Letterman then explained that he had requested that they play his first show back following his surgery, but was told they were touring in South America at the time; a tour they immediately cancelled in order to fulfill Dave’s wishes. That strong bond has remained between the iconic late night host and the legendary rock band ever since.
The clip (below) showcases not only a great presentation from Foo Fighters, but also some hilarious, touching, and awkward moments from the show’s illustrious past; The Joaquin Phoenix incident, the Drew Barrymore birthday gift, the incorrigible Harvey Pekar, and a variety of clips from the show’s revered Stupid Pet Tricks segment to name a few.
Watch everything here and enjoy the memories of a show and host who has chiselled a gap-toothed face for himself on the Mount Rushmore of Late Night Hosts.
We’ll miss you, Dave.
