There’s a lot to be said about the rising British alt-R&B star, FKA twigs, who recently announced her engagement to Robert Pattinson of ‘Twilight’.
She’s one of the most interesting people in the industry right now and her captivating and uniquely nuanced music videos have grabbed the attention of both critics and fans alike.
Born Tahliah Debrett Barnett, she acquired the nickname ‘twigs’ for her constantly cracking joints but after some legal troubles surrounding naming rights with the American pop band ‘the Twigs’, Barnett finally settled on FKA twigs (Formerly Known As).
FKA twigs initially started out at 16 as a backup dancer and made a scene-stealing appearance in the Jessie J video “Do It Like a Dude” from 2010. See here:
Since then, she’s made use of her production and vocal talent and produced a stack of startlingly fresh music and video content including one studio length album (LP1), two EPs (EP1 and EP2), and over a dozen music videos.
She’ll be touring quite extensively this summer, appearing at festivals across the world, including Osheaga in Montreal, Canada and Lollapalooza in Chicago, Illinois. Her second full-length album, (EP2) is due out later this year.
If you haven’t yet had a chance to properly check out her music, here are the top 3 music videos from FKA twigs, as selected by The NU.
Two Weeks (2014)
This hypnotic one-shot is one of the best videos we’ve seen in a long time. The camera takes a long, slow pan away from FKA twigs, who is revealed to be a giant, Egytian-esque Queen; singing and ruling over miniature versions of herself that dance all around. FKA twigs also manages to beautifully serenade us with the words, “mother fucker”, often repeated in the chorus; a difficult feat to accomplish in any medium.
Directed by Jessa Kanda, this similarly mesmerizing video is a close-up of FKA twigs with a CGI-laden manga twist. The effects get a little creepy towards the end, but the concept itself is unforgettable.
Glass and Patron
A stray in style from some of her other videos, ‘Glass and Patron’ is directed by FKA twigs, herself. The video is another dreamy sequence that has Twigs give birth to a magician’s scarf that transports her to a fashion runway in the middle of a forest where a Zoolander-ish dance battle takes place.
