Since the release of their haunting debut video for their first single, ‘River’, in 2014,

French-Cuban twin sisters Lisa-Kaindé Diaz and Naomi Diaz have been touring relentlessly behind their self-titled album debut (Ibeyi: Eye-Bey-Yee) and will continue to do so at various festivals across the world this summer.

By blending elements of their ancestral history with their own deeply personal experiences (the deaths of both their father and sister) the 20-year-olds have really created a style of music all of their own. It’s incredibly soulful R&B interweaved with an electronic, yet tribal approach.

The Ibeyi sisters also speak and sing in their father’s native Yoruba; a seldom spoken Nigerian dialect that drifted to Cuba in the 1700’s due to slavery. The Yoruba people apparently have the highest twinning rate in the world and the word ‘ibeyi’ literally means ‘twins’.

Signed to the progressive UK-based XL Recordings (FKA twigs, Ratatat, and Adele’s label), the girls will have every opportunity to succeed under the tutelage of owner/producer Richard Russell who’s already helped launch the careers of Vampire Weekend, MIA and many more.

With only shows on the horizon for Ibeyi for the next few months we aren’t getting our hopes up for any original music from them anytime soon, but Russell has remixed their hit ‘River’ and made it feel brand new again. Enjoy it here in the meantime and check out Ibeyi’s tour schedule to see where you can see them this summer.
