25-year-old Leon Bridges has risen to fame in the blink of an eye by bringing us authentic rhythm and blues music that The Wall Street Journal described as a “throwback to ’60s-soul a la Otis Redding and Sam Cooke.” Bridges released a brand new video for his track ‘Smooth Sailin’’ yesterday to promote his upcoming debut album, ‘Coming Home’, due out on June 23rd.
The former dishwasher from Fort Worth, Texas was playing local open-mic nights before being discovered by White Denim guitarist Austin Jenkins, who was impressed with his original work. With the help of Jenkins, Bridges released two songs on Soundcloud near the end of 2014 including the very popular ‘Coming Home’ which amassed 800,000 plays and attracted attention from dozens of record labels. He eventually signed with Columbia Records that December.
Describing his writing, he told DIYmag.com, “The concepts and stories of the 1950s and 1960s… the love songs, the heartbreak songs… I like to write about that, but I also like to write songs about my family. I keep family quite close in my songwriting, it’s what comes naturally.”
Since signing his first big deal, Bridges has been hard at work in 2015, touring (selling out shows across the US) and releasing a steady stream of videos that showcase his vintage style. After adding some realism to his previous videos by filming in black-and-white, Bridges breaks his mould and performs the upbeat ‘Smooth Sailin’’ in glorious colour.
