THE WOMBATS EXTEND TOUR TO PROMOTE ‘GLITTERBUG’

Fresh off the heels of the release of their 3rd album ‘Glitterbug’, UK indie rockers, The Wombats, have announced plans to extend their global summer tour. The Liverpool-based band has nearly 50 upcoming shows from now through November with major stops at Lollapalooza and a string of shows along the US East coast in September, including Terminal 5 in NYC.

The new album has been widely criticized for not living up to the hype of their first two releases (‘A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation’ [2007], ‘This Modern Glitch’ [2011]) and despite their massive UK success, their music has yet to appeal to American tastes. Their albums have landed at #11, #3, and #5 respectively on UK charts and only ‘Glitterbug’ has even made the top 100 in the US, mustering only a #91.

The album itself, although moderately more sombre than their previous releases, is actually a fine piece of work. In a review of the album, Pitchfork snidely remarked, ‘Glitterbug mostly seems like it was born of a frustration of not having made it in the States yet. Murphy proclaims, “We could be gigantic!” If you asked him, he’d probably say it was the girl in L.A., but he seems to also be not-so-covertly courting potential American fans.’

The Wombats would obviously welcome US popularity, but I somehow doubt that they would have written an entire album with subliminal messages intended to lure more success in the States. Their odd dissection of the album sounds like it was written by someone who’s watched ‘Room 237’ one too many times.

The upcoming shows in September will be a golden opportunity for the boys to showcase their talents to US audiences, but regardless of the results, I think it’s safe to say The Wombats aren’t in danger of having to abandon their instruments any time soon.

Give the album a listen and decide for yourself. The Wombats’ 80’s-infused synth rock has evolved, but it hasn’t sold out. Enjoy their great video for ‘Greek Tragedy’ below and stay tuned for a brand new video, due out on June 22nd, for their single ‘Be Your Shadow’.
