FREE TORONTO CONCERTS! FEAT: THE ROOTS , CHROMEO , JANELLE MONAE
If you aren’t a fan of sports, at least the 2015 Pan-Am Games are hosting a pretty impressive run of free concerts in the host city throughout the summer. The “Panamania” performances have already seen the likes of indie darlings Half Moon Run, Lights, Dragonette, and USS, who all performed on various days in July. The music is gearing up for this weekend though, with three back-to-back performances by some well-known names.
Friday August 7th: Chromeo — Montreal’s kings of nu-funk will be lighting up Nathan Phillips Square on Friday night. The duo released their fourth studio album ‘White Women’ last year, which included the smash hit “Jealous (I Ain’t With It)”. Since then, the electro-funkers have been touring continuously all over the globe. This Toronto stop is a part of their current North American tour, which heads off to New York next week. Be sure to bring your dancing shoes if you plan on heading to this free show. The performance starts at 9:45pm.
Saturday August 8th: The Roots — The Jimmy Fallon-backing band will be headlining Saturday night. The Roots, who have played with artists like Jay-Z and John Legend, will be taking a break from the Late Night set to play some of their own material this weekend. Questlove and crew have a total of eleven studio albums, three collab albums, three compilation albums, two EPs, and two live albums under their belt, plus some new material in the works, so it is anyone’s guess what they will play for Panamania. What you can expect: some fun neo-soul jams and a good time. The performance starts at 9:30pm.
Sunday August 9th: Janelle Monae — Atlanta-based singer and Outkast’s Big Boi prodigy Janelle Monae will be closing out the weekend on Sunday. Fusing memorable melodies with psychedelic R&B rhythms, Monáe’s tunes are groovy and definitely dancefloor-friendly. She’s currently in the works of releasing a compilation album under her own label, and recently released the single “Yoga”, which you can listen to below. Catch Janelle and her signature tux at 9:30pm.
If you’re a fan of free music, head down to Nathan Phillips Square one day (or three days) this weekend to catch some awesome live performances!
