Summer is winding down, and in true “Summertime Sadness” fashion, Lana Del Rey just released a sun-soaked new single to wrap up the season. “High By the Beach” is the singer’s second tease of her upcoming fourth LP, ‘Honeymoon’, which is expected to drop later this year. It follows ‘Ultraviolence’, which saw the indie singer exploring a more blues-influenced side to her music — but based on “High By The Beach”, it appears as though Lana will be embracing a more synth-infused pop sound on her upcoming effort.
Del Rey also released the title track to ‘Honeymoon’ back in July, but the lush, orchestral track is anything but a summer hit. “High By The Beach”, with the dizzying synths and the skittering beat that underlays the chorus, has a poppier vibe than any of her recent work. It’s the kind of back track you’d expect from a remix, not the original itself. “All I wanna do is get high by the beach,” Lana croons over and over in the song’s chorus, which is as repetitive as it is catchy.
