When I found Ellie Griffith’s new single, titled “Sweet”, on Soundcloud I immediately saw movie clips from Sin City, Moulin Rouge and 007. It has this dark cinematic quality to it and it would make a perfect soundtrack for any film of that nature. The song also brought me back to the early Muse era (Origin Of Symmetry/Absolution) when all those epic classical chord progressions so beautifully clashed with a current genre.
Griffiths’ enchanting voice floats through the polite and twisted chords of the verse that lead into the theatrical chorus that compelled me to write this post. A song like this comes from the exploration of chords and melody instead of current sounds and production. Something I hope more artists go back to. That being said, I think that Ellie’s producer Nolasco did an amazing job illuminating her best musical qualities. The production wasn’t fighting the vocals for the spotlight, like most music today. It was interesting but supportive.
The 20 year old BRIT School Of Performing Arts graduate is currently continuing her studies at Leeds College Of Music while recording her debut EP titled “LAMIA”, to be released June of 2016. So far Griffiths has already earned a spot on BBC 1 Xtra Live Sessions and Amazing Radio and she placed in the annual Sony ATV song writing competition.
