WILDE is a Toronto indie-pop group that we fell in love with after hearing their single titled “Flashlight”, last year. Give it a listen below.
After we got word that the band was booked to play the last day of CMW, we decided that we were going to end our week at their showcase. It was going to be our first time seeing them live and we were really curious to see how well they would interpret their world class recordings for the stage.
The three founding members, along with an extra keys player and guitarist, played a short four song set for some eager festival goers at AdelaideHall. We were really impressed by how much of a full band sound they had, given that their EP leans heavily towards a digital soundscape. Brandon Merenick’s performance on the drums was a huge part of the new, more organic, flavour of each song and, lead singer, Giselle Map’s vocals were more emotional and more compelling live. Producer and digital noisemaker, Olutobi ‘Nyra’ Akinwumi, was the bridge that connected the familiar sounds from the record to their new live elements. It was everything we wanted to hear and more.
The highlight of the show was definitely their closing song, “Temple”. It’s the best song on their EP and their best song live. Give it a listen below and stay tuned for some brand new music from WILDE later this year.
