The Lumineers recently released their video for “Cleopatra”, which is the first in a series of videos directed by Isaac Ravishankara. The video follows a middle aged female taxi driver as she drives around different people. It shows her driving a pregnant woman, a mother and child, and a couple in love, all of which bring back memories for her.
At one point in the video the taxi driver locks eyes with a young woman, (who is Neyla Pekarek of The Lumineers), and they smile at each other. This makes viewers wonder who this woman may be. Is this the taxi driver’s daughter? Does this woman remind her of herself? Eventually the taxi driver’s son joins her in the cab. They drive for a bit, and then park the car to enjoy some burgers together and share some laughs.
The video closes with the driver bringing her son to his father’s house, who also happens to be her ex-husband. The video was heartwarming up until this point. The driver then watches herself walk into the house with her ex-husband and son, but then she fades away. In reality, she gets into her cab and leaves all alone.
This video took me on an emotional rollercoaster. At first I felt happy and warm when the driver was with her son, but then after she dropped her son off and saw her ex-husband, I felt distraught. Overall, I thought this video was very well done. Music videos should take viewers on a journey, and this definitely one did. I am excited to see how the rest of the videos in this series turn out.
