Summers for me tend to be about a music, attending festivals and shows, discovering new music and blasting it loud with the windows down. I’ve listened to an exuberant amount of new music this summer, and I’ve narrowed it down to 10 songs that I think you need to hear. Coincidentally, 5 out of the 10 songs come from artists down under, in Australia and New Zealand – I promise it wasn’t intentional, they’re just really talented! Take a listen and enjoy these jams.
I Love You Always Forever – Betty Who
Australian born, Betty Whocranks out a cover of the 90s hit by Donna Lewis. Complete with acapella arrangements, a groovy baseline, that will make you wanna move, and Betty’s airy vocals brings new life to the song.
In My Blood – The Veronicas
Remember The Veronicasand their hits you blasted in 2007? (Re: “Untouched” and “Take Me on the Floor”). The Aussie Sister duo is back with a dance pop hit that you don’t want to miss out on. The duo also released an acoustic performance of the song that shows just how talented these two are.
Castaway – King Deco
“Sometimes the king is a woman” reads King Deco’s twitter bio – native to Jordan, King Deco’s lead single Castaway is the perfect summer song with its island vibes. Complete with steel drums and island metaphors: “Don’t leave me stranded like a castaway”.
Fool’s Gold – DAGNY ft. BØRNS
Hailing from Norway, Dagny released a single featuring BØRNS about questioning a relationship that might not have been real. Dagny first released “Backbeat” earlier this year which was widely successful in the streaming realm.
Where Are You? – Nakita
Not much is known about Nakita, though we do know she’s from New Zealand. The song feels uplifting and has a good energy to it – definitely keeping an eye out for what’s next from her.
500 – Internal Server Error
IOU – Annabel Jones
Music doesn’t always have to be complicated – and Annabel Jones’ IOU is a simply constructed f*ck you. With few elements and smooth vocals, this song jams hard.
Off their forthcoming album “Higher” is an alt-pop anthem that features classic gang vocals and an uplifting chorus. A song that makes you want to get up and do something with your life, TNAF pump out another song that gives great hope that their new album will be a success.
WILD – Troye Sivan ft. Alessia Cara
Though previously released with Troye’s vocals only, Alessia adds her own voice and verse to this love song. Troye was recently in Toronto filming the video with Alessia which feels like a 90s home movie.
When We Were Young (Panama Wedding Remix) – The Wild Wild
