Grammy award winning R&B singer has been making headlines – and not just with his music. Earning the additional title of ‘philanthropist’ to his name, Scarborough native Abel Tesfaye, more popularly known as The Weeknd, has donated $300,000.00 to charity in the course of a week.
On August 6, 2016 Ethiopian born Tesfaye presented a cheque of $50,000.00 to the University of Toronto in order fund an Ethiopic Studies Program. According to The Toronto Star, Tesfaye’s donation came as a response to a challenge by U of T professor Michael Gervers, of the Department of Historical and Cultural Studies, who promised to donate $50,000 of his own money if the university and the Ethiopian community could match the contribution.
Only four days later, The Weeknd announced that he would be donating $250,000.00 to Black Lives Matter. Originating in the African American community, Black Lives Matter is an international activist movement that campaigns against violence and systematic racism towards black people.
Since his YouTube debut in 2011, The Weeknd’s quick rise to fame has been undeniable, and it’s pretty cool to see an artist of this caliber give back to his community.
