With his new album, “Starboy” looming, The Weeknd has just released two new singles to tide us all over until the album’s scheduled release date on November 25th. “Party Monster” is the third single off of the album following “Starboy” and “False Alarm”. The song is the much more dazed and depressed of the two new singles that were premiered on November 17th.

“I’m good, I’m good, I’m great

Know it’s been a while, now I’m mixing up the drink

I just need a girl who gone really understand”

The snare drum and The Weeknd’s high-pitched vocals bring it to life, while still finding a way for the aura of the song to be dark and melancholic like most of his previous work. The song was co-written by Lana Del Rey. In previous interviews with Pitchfork, Abel Tesfaye (otherwise known as The Weekend) has talked about his collaborative work with Lana; “Me and Lana have been friends for a long time. I’ve inspired her, she’s inspired me. I feel like we’ve always been talking to each other through our music. She is the girl in my music, and I am the guy in her music.”

“I Feel It Coming” on the other hand, is far more positive, fun, and upbeat in comparison to a lot of Tesfaye’s other tracks. It has a far more “house”, “disco” vibe, and the fact that it features French electronic duo, Daft Punk adds a special futuristic element to the song. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal The Weeknd described what it was like to work with the French electronic duo, Daft Punk. “Their studio is like a spaceship; there’s a lot of gear,” he said. “But the way they make music, the way they explain it, is very cinematic. It’s like they’re reading a page out of a novel – ‘We want to make sure that at the end, it feels like the sun’s coming up, and maybe there’s a car chase.’ They can get technical, but it was

interesting how they visualize making music.”

“You’ve been scared of love and what it did to you

You don’t have to run, I know what you’ve been through

Just a simple touch and it can set you free

We don’t have to rush when you’re alone with me”

The common thread between the new tracks is The Weeknd’s unique vocals. The songs were also both produced by Doc McKinney who worked with The Weeknd during his time making the “Trilogy”.

Tesfaye has previously mentioned that the upcoming album is “a thousand percent” inspired by David Bowie and Prince. The album titled being a play on Bowie’s “Starman”. (1)
