On December 1st, Beats 1 on Apple Music gave the first play of Post Malone’s new song “Leave.” This is the latest single from album “Stoney” which comes out this Friday. At only 21, the Texas singer/rapper/producer has been steadily gaining attention since his first single “White Iversion” in 2015. Since then Post Malone has worked with 50 Cent, Young Thug and Kanye West. His friendship with Justin Bieber led to him being the opening act for the Purpose World Tour and a collab with the song “Déjà vu.”
“Leave” is not a typical Post Malone song. He only sings in this song, which is atypical for Malone, known mostly as a rapper. The hip-hop artist shows off his emotional side with this song. The background consists of string instruments, a very steady beat and a choral sound of ‘ohs’ beneath Malone’s singing. The verses of the song are sung in his lower register, which is not a strong part of Malone’s voice. Interestingly, this works in his favour, adding a layer of vulnerability to a song about heartbreak. The chorus goes back into the stronger part of his voice, with a harmony line on top. A song exposing a more sensitive side of Post Malone’s repertoire seems out of character. Yet, it is a great move for the artist, a strong single and will be an excellent addition to his album.
