THE RETURN OF AT THE DRIVE-IN

I remember listening to Relationship of Command over and over again as an angsty teen. At that point Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala had already left the band to form the progressive-rock project, The Mars Volta. I had my pick of post-hardcore punk and experimental rock, and I listened to it all. While Rodriguez-Lopez continues to keep himself busy today with solo albums and supergroups, the reunion of At The Drive-In was a surprise to us all. Nonetheless, the band returned to the stage, and now, much to the delight of fans, we have ourselves a new single (and soon to be new album).

In none but the style of singer and eccentric lyricist, Bixler-Zavala, the new single, and title track for the up-and-coming album, is called “Governed By Contagions.” With its release is a lyric video that brings us into an eery black-and-white world that you would expect from a song with such a name. Besides the intricate word play and heavy content, “Governed By Contagions” is full-throttled punk rock song that reminds us At The Drive-In can still incite some very intense slam dancing.

Watch the lyrics video here:

While it may not be the next “Cosmonaut” or “One Armed Scissor,” favourites from their past release, Relationship of Command in 2000, “Governed By Contagions,” contains the post-hardcore guitar licks from Rodriguez-Lopez and heavy use of a full drum kit (with some emphasis on the crash symbol). The vocals are perhaps less abrasive, but Bixler-Zavala has not forgotten his punk roots. There is plenty of screaming to go around.

Stay tuned for the release of the new LP, Governed by Contagions, and stream the single on the service provider of your choice now!
