What is the cost of playing at Trump’s Inauguration? For Chrisette Michele, it could be the loss of a career.

Since Chrisette agreed to perform at Donald Trump’s official Inaugural Ball, the R&B singer has received world-wide attention, backlash, and featured in numerous popular publications.

Artists like Jennifer Holliday and B Street Band, a Bruce Springsteen cover band, dropped out of performing after receiving an overwhelming amount of negative responses from fans and media. However, this did not scare away Chrisette from performing.

For those who are unfamiliar with the R&B singer, Chrisette has sung on tracks with Jay Z, John Legend and Rick Ross, to name a few. She even signed herself under her own label Rich Hipster. She won a Grammy Award for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2009 for her song “Be OK.”

Since her performance, Spike Lee announced that he would no longer be using her song in an upcoming Netflix remake of She’s Gotta Have It. Chrisette has fired back with releasing “No Political Genius” and wrote an open letter quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. defending her decision to perform. India Arie also wrote an open letter to Chrisette, not necessarily defending her, but writing the letter to appeal to people’s humanity and emotions about Chrisette’s choice to performance.

Reportedly, Chrisette earned ( give or take) $250,000 to play the 30-minute gig. However, Chrisette has said numerous times, it was not for the money, so why did she agree to perform and “didn’t think twice“?

Christette has now appeared in numerous public appearances after the gig, stating there simply was no hesitation in her choice to perform. Chrisette’s states she wanted to be the voice for the voiceless and stands by her decision.

Only time will tell, if the R&B singer will overcome her career retribution.
