Montreal native and son of former Montreal Canadiens goalie Patrick Roy, Jonathan Roy dropped his second album, “Mr. Optimist Blues” on January 20th. I had the pleasure of attending the official album release concert at the Drake Underground, and now fully understand why Roy decided to pursue music rather than hockey, after delivering a stellar performance.

Roy’s music covers a wide spectrum of genres in the most beautiful way. He is a little bit of rock, pop, reggae, indie and folk.

Previous to the release of Mr. Optimist Blues, Roy teamed up with Corey Hart (“Sunglasses at Night”) and released “Driving Home for Christmas”, which received multiple radio plays in Quebec. In addition, Hart wrote “Daniella Denmark” for Roy, and shared it with VP of Warner Music Canada, Steve Waxman, which ultimately got the momentum rolling for Roy’s music career.

A personal favourite off the new album, and current single, “Good Things” is more than just “a lot of sex,” Roy said at the concert on Monday, referring to the “Good Things” music video. The song has multiple underlying meanings, one including the battle with depression, and gathering the strength to keep fighting. The video depicts a dark and emotional representation of Roy’s inner thoughts and pain. The video gained fast attention and has received 200,000 views since its January 13th release. “Good Things” also appeared on Spotify’s New Music Friday, which has attributed to the success so far.

Roy not only played songs off the new album, but also covered Prince’s “Cream” and Eurithmics’ “Sweet Dreams are Made of This.”

With a powerhouse filled team behind him, a strong work ethic, humble demeanor, and amazing vocals. I’m positive we will be seeing a lot more of Jonathan Roy in the near future.
