Toronto’s own pop singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes released a new single, “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” on April 20th and everything about it lives up to its title.
Mendes shows us a side to him like never before. The 18 year old gets a little edgy, aggressive and mysterious in his new track off the re-released deluxe Illuminate album.
He starts the song off with his signature acoustic notes and soft, angelic voice then transitions into a lively melody in which we hear a mature shift in his sound.
He sings the lines “She pulls me in enough to keep me guessing / maybe I should stop and start confessing” with intriguing curiousness in his voice as he is tempted by the characteristic of this girl. Mendes’ voice gets raspy and edgy as he passionately describes the energetic vibe this girl gives off. We can hear his voice crack from the aggressiveness he delivers, stepping out of his comfort zone. This is definitely a step up from hits “Treat You Better” and “Mercy”.
We can’t wait to hear what Mendes has in store for us in the future. In the meantime he kicks off his Illuminate World Tour in the UK today and makes a two night appearance in Toronto starting August 11th.
