At 15 years old, singer-songwriter Billie Eilish releases another incredible track titled “Idontwannabeyouanymore” off her debut EP: dont smile at me.
Eilish’s dark pop sound share similarities between Lorde and Lana Del Rey, however; at such a young age, her lyrics and creativity are wise beyond her years. Her single “Ocean Eyes”, one of the first releases off her SoundCloud in 2016, talks about falling deeply in love with someone. She then released “Bellyache” last February and this track shares the mind of a serial killer. You’re probably thinking, where are these inspirations coming from at such a young age?
The answer is: imagination.
Eilish spoke in an interview with Billboard about how she takes on writing these vivid, emotionally tasteful lyrics by stating that: “You don’t have to be in love with someone to write a song about being in love with someone. You don’t have to hate somebody to write a song about hating somebody. You don’t have to kill people to write a song about killing people. I’m not going to kill people, so I’m just going to become another character.”
This is exactly what she does. She puts herself in someone else’s shoes and portrays their persona. It’s all in her imagination and she does an incredible job with putting these emotions out there. She does draw from her own experiences and we can hear it with “idontwannabeyouanymore”. Listeners are able to experience raw talent as she soulfully sings about the insecurities going on in her head.
Idontwannabeyouanymore is a song that showcases her flexibility between being upbeat and vulnerable. Take a listen below and be sure to give her EP a listen when it releases August 11th.
In the meantime, Eilish will be starting her first ever tour in the fall with sold out dates, including Toronto on October 14 at The Drake, across North America. We can’t wait to hear more from Eilish. She is on a rise!
