Four years (!) after her fantastic first mixtape Cut 4 Me and her Hallucinogen EP (2015), LA based alternative R&B singer Kelela finally released her long-awaited debut album “Take Me Apart” on Friday and it is well worth the wait!
Like Kelela’s past projects, the album is an ode to 90s R&B where love, lust and heartbreak are the predominant themes of her lyrics. On Take Me Apart, we find Kelela laying sumptuous vocals over with sultry, cutting-edge electronic productions.
After releasing “LMK” and “Frontline” this summer, she picked “Waitin'” as the third single. This latest offering finds Kelela embracing a more pop-ish sound, a perfect autumnal exhale.
Produced by frequent collaborator Jam City, LA super producer Ariel Rechtshaid and kwes, the upbeat track is a follow up to “Frontline” and outines a post-breakup encounter with an ex.
“Waitin’ is when you see your ex that you broke up with after that break. You really think it’s over. You’re like ‘I’m good,’ but you see them again, and it sort of just … It f**ks you up. That’s where it comes from”
shares the R&B vocalist about the track (via iheartRADIO).
Kelela will support Take Me Apart with a fall tour throughout Europe and North America, including a date alongside Solange!
Here is a live rendition, with the full song below that.
