Right before releasing his first single, “Right Now” (listen here), I got the opportunity to chat with Steven Mulcare about his brand-new single, upcoming projects, his current production, Legends of Motown, and his thoughts on the music industry. With more music in the works, I can’t wait to hear more from the talent artist.
Tell me a bit about yourself, and how you got started in the music industry?
my parents performed in choirs most of their lives and got me and my 3 siblings involved in music early with piano. then we all bounced around on different instruments. I started singing during early adulthood.
How would you describe your sound?
R&B/Soul vocals meets funky soulful grooves. Classic soul sounds, modern sounds, electronic and future sounds. In time i hope to experiment with elements of as many sounds/styles as possible.
I noticed you are currently starring in the production Legends of Motown. Can you tell me about the process of how you landed the gig?
I joined the Legends of Motown Act after the band leader heard me performing in another group I sing with periodically.
How has the experience been so far? Will this experience shape any upcoming music?
L.O.M. has being a great experience and has taught me a lot – i’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve loved classic Motown for most of my life but performing the songs as I have over the past couple years I definitely hope some of that greatness will rub off, inspire and influence the music I create going forward.
Speaking of upcoming music, let’s talk about your new single “Right Now.” Can you tell me a bit about the process of how the song came to be?
“Right Now” was a very organic experience I’m glad to say. Myself and my producer Tayo got in the studio and started throwing out ideas and then chords and melodies, etc. The song just flowed out pretty naturally and we just sort of tapped into feelings and ideas and experiences lyrically…sorta what we were feeling and what we thought the music was also saying.
How did NU Music help in the process?
NU music guided, helped, oversaw the entire process. Kept things focused and saw the project through really nicely. Kudos NU!
What was the inspiration or story behind “Right Now?”
All the swirling thoughts and feelings one feels in a relationship, mainly. Despite that, seize the moment.
Do you think technology has supported or hindered the music industry?
Both. Two major things that jump out at me are: technology can often (not always) brings the overall creativity and musicianship down cause CPUs allow us to cheat a lot. On the other hand, there’s more freedom and options for a music career with the internet and a quickly expanding global economy.
What projects are you working on right now, that you can share with us?
Always working on new songs, hope to have something ready in the very near future…
