Augustine’s “Picking Up Speed” evokes the warm, comfortable melancholia of a new love considered in the reflection of a bus window; not sad, but deeply emotional in a way that almost brings tears to your eyes for reasons you’re not sure you can explain.

His voice warbles in falsetto over the embrace of the song’s lush, synthy backdrop; Augustine fears that his relationship to the song’s object may have become too much of a good thing. His insecurity is quiet, much like the tone of the song, projected inward and bashfully innocent. He worries that he pales in comparison to someone he holds in such high regard, but I hope he realizes that if they’ve come this far, he must be doing something right.
