Elli Moore doesn’t mean to come off like she’s emotionless, and yet her disaffection inevitably finds itself at home on her single “Stomach.” Despite the strong feelings she attempts to relate through the lyrics, it does not appear that prosody is one of this song’s great strengths. Her vocal delivery is muted and playing cool, constrained by plastic pop convention that rewards the sultry and sensual over true catharsis.
“Stomach” isn’t unlikeable, per se, and if it were a more straightforward love song, this criticism would be moot. However, I sense some real venom in Moore’s words that fails to find outlet in the timbre of the music. This release seems a missed opportunity to pump out a sob-and-sing-along smash that listeners could really feel from the bottoms of their hearts.
